What Jesus Has Done Study and Quiet Times For Students

16 For everything was created by Him,
in heaven and on earth,
the visible and the invisible,
whether thrones or dominions
or rulers or authorities
all things have been created through Him and for Him.
17 He is before all things,
and by Him all things hold together.
18 He is also the head of the body, the church;
He is the beginning,
the firstborn from the dead,
so that He might come to have
first place in everything.
19 For God was pleased to have
all His fullness dwell in Him,
20 and through Him to reconcile
everything to Himself
by making peace
through the blood of His cross
whether things on earth or things in heaven.

21 Once you were alienated and hostile in your minds because of your evil actions. 22 But now He has reconciled you by His physical body through His death, to present you holy, faultless, and blameless before Him 23 if indeed you remain grounded and steadfast in the faith and are not shifted away from the hope of the gospel that you heard. This gospel has been proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and I, Paul, have become a servant of it.

Colossians 1:15-23

Student Sunday Lesson – April 12

Warm-up Questions

  • If you could change anything about the way you look, what would it be?
  • If God could have his picture taken, what do you think he would look like?
  • Who do you think Jesus is?

Observe Questions

  • Read Colossians 1:15-16. How does Paul describe Jesus here? What’s Jesus’ role in creation?
  • Look at verses 17-18. According to these verses, why is Jesus so unique? What is his role with the church?
  • Read verses 19-20. What amazing truths about Jesus are mentioned in these verses?
  • Read verses 21-23. According to verse 22, what’s the aim or goal of our reconciliation through Jesus Christ?

Think Questions

  • Paul says Jesus is the visible image of the invisible God—like a photograph. In what ways does Jesus give us a glimpse of what God is really like?
  • Verses 16-17 refer to the scope of creation through Jesus. What’s the difference between saying “all things were created by him” and “for him”? What does this tell us about the origin and ownership of the world?
  • Why do you think God made Jesus the head of the church? Of all the descriptions of Jesus and the church in verse 18, which one do you feel is the most interesting? Why?
  • What was the purpose of Jesus Christ’s coming to us (verse 20)? How did he accomplish the goal of reconciliation between God and people?

Apply Questions

  • What priorities battle for supreme importance in your life?
  • What areas of your life do you struggle to give God reign over? What holds you back from giving these areas over to God?
  • Paul says in verse 20 that Jesus made “peace through his blood.” Have you experienced this peace with God? Would you like to? How could your life change as a result of God’s peace and rule in your life?
