Are you teaching your children to be givers? Do you model a life of giving? Do your children see you holding your time, talents and treasures loosely so you can give quickly when opportunity arises? Do you help your children understand that everything that comes our way is a gift from God? We get to decide what to do with it, too. One part of our giving is to the Lord. As we give our tithe to the church, we are found in obedience to Malachi 3:10 which says, “‘Bring the full tenth into the storehouse so that there may be food in My house. Test Me in this way,’ says the Lord of Hosts. ‘See if I will not open the floodgates of heaven and pour out a blessing for you without measure.’” God says that this is the one area we are not only allowed, but encouraged, to “test the Lord” in. If you think you cannot afford to tithe, test God in this and give it a try. Write that check or give online as soon as that deposit hits the bank and watch a faithful God meet your needs. You literally cannot out give God! If you give more, He blesses you more. Your children are watching. Show them what obedience to the Lord looks like in the fleshed out day-to-day life. And remember 2 Corinthians 9:7 says that God loves a cheerful giver, so be sure to talk about the joy of giving to the Lord. Proverbs 3:9 says, “Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the first fruits of all your crops.” But we teach our children about being givers by much more than our tithes and offerings to the church.
We also teach about giving when we share with others. Many people in this world need help or assistance. Teach your children about planned sharing of what God gives you by setting aside a certain amount for giving on purpose. The ways to help others can be endless! Maybe you choose a child in another country and sponsor them for the essentials in life. Maybe you give for clean drinking water somewhere. Maybe you buy and donate extra school supplies to give to someone. Maybe you keep your spiritual eyes open and look for where God might have you share such as giving to a single mom during the holidays or just to help with extra bills. The best kind of giving is when you get to give in secret. Maybe you help pay a child’s way to camp so they might come to know Jesus. The possibilities never end.
Maybe start by giving your child an allowance and helping them to figure out their weekly tithe and helping them to remember to bring it to the Lord’s house on Sunday. What an honor to teach our children to give and not only think of themselves with the money God provides them. We can model giving of our time and talents too. Serve at church. Serve at school. Help a neighbor. Be kind at the store. Help someone who needs help. If you pray and ask God for opportunities to teach your children about giving, get ready…..God will answer.
Enjoy growing as a giver yourself and also enjoy teaching your children that God loves cheerful givers!
