Quiet Times for Kids

Quiet Times for Kids

As a church, we encourage our church members to have daily quiet times. A specific time set aside to meet privately with God. We encourage children, who have become believers, to have daily quiet times too.

Consistent time with the Father and in His word is how we come to truly know God. Above all, model this spiritual discipline. Let your children catch you starting each day in prayer and Bible reading.

For our parents, who are the foundational faith builders in the lives of their children, you might not be sure about how to help your child take the first steps in meeting daily with Jesus. I wanted to offer a little bit of help in this area by sharing one way of doing this.

Help them pick a quiet spot, free from electronics, TVs or siblings, to meet with God. Help them choose a time of the day that works for them. Be sure they have a Bible, pen and paper or journal.

A 7-Minute Quiet Time Starter:

  • 1/2 minute: Pray for guidance from the Holy Spirit
    • Invite God to lead you and help understand the verses you read.
  • 3 minutes: Reading of Scripture and meditation
    • This can be from a devotional book or right from the Bible.
  • 1-1/2 minutes: Application and writing down insights
    • What is God showing or asking of them?
    • How can they live out or do what God has shown them in the Bible?
    • Then journal/make notes.
  • 2 minutes: Prayer
    • Include praise, confession of sin, thanks, personal needs, and prayer for others.

This is only a guide. You and your children may find later that it is impossible to spend only seven minutes with God.

You may wonder how much of the Bible your child should read. A general idea is, however old the child is, they might read that many verses from the Bible each day for themselves. It might be helpful to sit with your child in the beginning and guide them through this for a few days. Then encourage your child to take ownership of their personal time with God. Remind them if they should forget.

Consistent time with the Father and in His word is how we come to truly know God. Above all, model this spiritual discipline. Let your children catch you starting each day in prayer and Bible reading.

In the morning, O LORD, hear my voice. In the morning I lay my needs in front of you, and I wait.

Psalm 5:3

You can do this! We are here for you and praying for you. Tell your children that Ms. Sheila misses them dearly. Hope to see you soon.
