No Sleepwalking and Quiet Times For Students

Virtual Meeting Sundays at 9 am

About the times and the seasons: Brothers and sisters, you do not need anything to be written to you. ² For you yourselves know very well that the day of the Lord will come just like a thief in the night. ³ When they say, “Peace and security,” then sudden destruction will come upon them, like labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. ⁴ But you, brothers and sisters, are not in the dark, for this day to surprise you like a thief. ⁵ For you are all children of light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or the darkness. ⁶ So then, let us not sleep, like the rest, but let us stay awake and be self-controlled. ⁷ For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night. ⁸ But since we belong to the day, let us be self-controlled and put on the armor of faith and love, and a helmet of the hope of salvation. ⁹ For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, ¹⁰ who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him. ¹¹ Therefore encourage one another and build each other up as you are already doing.

Warm-up Questions

• Are you someone who likes to know what’s going to happen, or do you love being spontaneous?
• Are you a morning person or a night person? What morning routines do you have?
• What makes you most anxious in life?

OBSERVE

• Read 1 Thessalonians 5:1-3. What are some words that come to mind to describe the return of Jesus? What does Paul have to say about when it will be?
• According to verses 4-8, what’s our responsibility as Christians?
• Based on verses 9-10, what’s the result of Jesus’ death?
• What kinds of words are we supposed to speak to each other? In verse 11, whom does Paul say to include?

THINK

• Verse 2 refers to a “thief in the night.” Why do you think Paul describes Jesus’ return like this?
• What do you think being the “children of light” means?
• Look at verses 7-9. How do people of the night act? What makes Christians different?
• Verse 11 tells us to encourage each other. What are some ways to do this?

APPLY

• How have you been sleepwalking though life?
• What are some ways you could wake yourself up?
• Can you think of some friends who need a wake-up call? What are some ways you could encourage them?
• What are some ways our culture is sleepwalking?

2. Think about the pain Paul talks about. Why would that day be painful?
3. Think about the differences between darkness and light. How are we (Christians) different from others?

2. Whom do we belong to? What’s special about that?
3. We don’t belong to the darkness, but we are drawn to it. What draws you into the darkness?
