It Can All Start With The Ten Commandments

It Can All Start With The Ten Commandments

This week’s online Sunday School lesson is on the Ten Commandments.  God gave us these ten rules to keep us safe and help us to live lives that point to God and His holiness.  Are they easy?  Not always.  They are not easy for us grownups or our children.  Being familiar with the things that matter to God is important for us parents, so we can better live them out and model them to our children.  Living God’s way and obeying God’s guidelines for our lives is not enough.  We need to use our words to help point our children to the Lord.  Tell your children why you make certain choices that you do in life.  Or share why you, as a family, do not do some things others might do.  Help them understand that obedience to God and His written word is a form of worship.  In John 14:15, Jesus says, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.”  Teach your children that showing our love to Jesus is doing what He says to do in the Bible.  You can even share that sometimes it is hard to do the right thing, but our love for Jesus is better than anything else out there!  Go to Exodus 20 and learn them together with your children.  Let the Ten Commandments shape your family and your choices.  God will be glorified, and your love will be expressed to King Jesus.

Remember also that one of the things that the law does is show that mankind is not perfect like God.  We will fail at keeping His laws perfectly.  Therefore, we will fall short of God’s perfection, and that disobedience to His written word is called sin.  Explain that we are all sinners and that is why we need a Savior, who is Jesus.  When your children are disobedient, use it as a teaching moment in their spiritual walk.  Begin to show them their need for the forgiveness that only Jesus can provide.  Trust the Holy Spirit to work in your child and draw your child unto Jesus and salvation.  Pray for this moment in time, when your child calls out to God asking for forgiveness and places their faith in Jesus’ finished work on the cross.  And to think that it can all be started with the Ten Commandments.  Let’s get started now.
