God said to Moses, ‘I AM WHO I AM’; and He said, ‘Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, I AM has sent me to you.’”
Exodus 3:14
I don’t know about you, but I have a favorite name of God. It is I AM. In the book of Exodus, Moses encountered God through the burning bush and God gave him his assignment of leading God’s people out of slavery in Egypt. When Moses asked God what he should say if they ask him about this God that sent him or what His name was, “God said to Moses, ‘I AM WHO I AM’; and He said, ‘Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, I AM has sent me to you.’” Exodus 3:14. God was the God of Moses’ forefathers, and He was also the God of Moses and the Israelites, God’s chosen nation.
What a mighty God to only need the name I AM. Enough said. The Great and Mighty I AM. God, I AM, isn’t just the God of the past, though He is. God, I AM, isn’t just the God of the future, though He is. God, I AM, is the God of the present. Our God right now! We know that yesterday is gone, we can’t relive it. We can’t go back and experience God in yesterday. We also know that tomorrow is not promised to us and we aren’t there yet. Therefore, we can’t experience God tomorrow. All that we truly have in this life is the now, the present, the this moment. That means that if I don’t have my spiritual eyes open to look for God and see Him at work, I might miss the very presence of God. I need to live each day, each moment, experiencing God, I AM. Not God, I WILL. Not God, I WAS. God, I AM.
If ever we needed encouragement to live life with our eyes fixed on God, I AM, this is it. If I am not careful to look for God sightings, or allow God to use me in this current moment, I might totally miss encountering God, I AM. I can’t wait to live my life as worship to Him. God, I AM, is active and living and powerful and personal. I don’t know about you, but I plan to live my life to the best of my ability, present in each moment, looking for evidence of God, I AM.
Do you have a favorite name of God from scripture? Will you join me in taking time to look for God in the everyday moments? Will you help your children learn to see God, I AM, at work in this world we live in? We may even need to take our shoes off as we enter holy ground, the presence of God, I AM.
