16 Therefore, don’t let anyone judge you in regard to food and drink or in the matter of a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath day. 17 These are a shadow of what was to come; the substance is the Messiah. 18 Let no one disqualify you, u insisting on ascetic practices and the worship of angels, claiming access to a visionary realm and inflated without cause by his unspiritual mind. 19 He doesn’t hold on to the head, from whom the whole body, nourished and held together by its ligaments and tendons, develops with growth from God.
20 If you died with the Messiah to the elemental forces of this world, why do you live as if you still belonged to the world? Why do you submit to regulations: 21 “Don’t handle, don’t taste, don’t touch”? 22 All these regulations refer to what is destroyed by being used up; they are commands and doctrines of men. 23 Although these have a reputation of wisdom by promoting ascetic practices, humility, and severe treatment of the body, they are not of any value in curbing self-indulgence.

Colossians 2:16-23

Warm-up Questions

•Describe a time when you broke a rule and got away with it. How did you feel afterward? How do you feel about it now?

•Why do we need rules in our lives? What would happen if we didn’t live by any rules?

•Do you ever feel restricted by rules set for you? Which rules are the hardest for you to follow?

Observe Questions

•Read Colossians 2:16-18. What does Paul say not to put up with?

•Based on verses 20-21, what does Paul say about rules?

•Look at verses 22-23. How does Paul feel about man-made rules?

Think Questions

•Look at verse 16. How were people being judged in this verse? Why do we judge others? Do you find yourself judging others? Why?

•Verses 17-19 mention people who are out of touch with God. How do you feel and act when you’re out of touch with God?

•In verse 20 Paul asks why we’d let humans determine our actions instead of God. How do you fall into this trap? How can you break the cycle?

•Define the words humble and show-off. Do you think you fall into either category?

Apply Questions

•Why is it so easy to be judgmental? What makes us critical of others?

•Have you ever been on the receiving end of criticism from a judgmental person? How does it make you feel?

•Why is it sometimes easier to do what our friends say rather than doing what God tells us through the Bible?

•What’s one step you could take this week to be more accepting of God’s rules?
