Advent

Advent

Many Christians look forward to Advent each year.  Advent is a special time of expectant waiting and preparation for both the celebration of Christ’s birth and for the second coming of Christ. Advent means “coming” in Latin.  Advent typically starts four Sundays before Christmas Day.  Each week, or Sunday, many light a candle and read scriptures that prepare their hearts and minds for the real reason for Christmas.  Candles are sometimes lit as a symbol that Jesus has come into this world of darkness as the light of the world!  Each of the four weeks preceding Christmas day focuses on a different concept.  They are typically hope, peace, love and joy.  It is a countdown of sorts to really celebrating Christmas for what it is, the arrival of God’s Son, Jesus, our Savior and Redeemer.

I want to encourage you to consider participating in a celebration of Advent this year with your family and children.  Help them to remain focused on what is really important.  It doesn’t take long to teach your children that Christmas is a wonderful fulfillment of God’s promise to His people.  To make things simpler for you, the faith builder in your home, I’m attaching two different child-friendly Advent activities.  Check them out and see which one might be a match for your family.  Simply print them off and get started enjoying the holiday for what it really is.  Advent would begin on November 29th this year.

May God bless you richly as you teach your children how to celebrate Christmas with Christ at the very center.
