True Contentment

True Contentment

“I know how to make do with little, and I know how to make do with a lot. In any and all circumstances I have learned the secret of being content—whether well fed or hungry, whether in abundance or in need. I am able to do all things through him who strengthens me.”

Philippians 4:12-13

Cambridge Dictionary tells us that contentment is happiness and satisfaction, often because you have everything you need. I don’t know about you, but there aren’t many days that I feel like I have everything I need. There are days when happiness is hard to find. Are you content each day? Do you think that when all of the laundry is finally done and put away, then you will be content? Or maybe after the last child is out of diapers. How about when that last 10 pounds has finally been lost, then contentment will come! Will a new car do it because yours is just too old? Would an updated wardrobe do the trick? Is a dream vacation like your neighbor just had the answer?

Paul tells us in Philippians 4:12-13, “I know how to make do with little, and I know how to make do with a lot. In any and all circumstances I have learned the secret of being content—whether well fed or hungry, whether in abundance or in need. I am able to do all things through him who strengthens me.” He also reminds us in verse 19, “And my God will supply all your needs according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” It is so easy to get tired and worn out from the season of life that you are in.  It is so easy to compare your life to another. It is so easy to look ahead to what life could be…if only.

Remember that God has you exactly where you are supposed to be. He has chosen the role you are in right now for this season. Don’t wish away a season of life thinking that you will find contentment. Be content where God has you right now, knowing that true contentment comes from the Lord and He will supply exactly what you need for each day. Reach out to God daily in His word and through prayer to find the contentment you long for. Discontentment brings Satan joy. Developing a thankful attitude squashes that joy. Proverbs 3:5 tells us, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own understanding.” When you wake up each day, trust God, and seek His will. God has surrounded you with His people, not to compare your life with, but to walk through life with. Rest in the knowledge that God’s peace is greater than whatever you are facing today that might steal your contentment. God is good!
