The Parents We Are Meant To Be

The Parents We Are Meant To Be

How are you doing my friends? How is homeschooling going? How is being intentional going? How is making disciples in your home going? Things can seem overwhelming as parents right now. Thankfully, God is in control and God is with you each step of the way. You may feel that you need to be a spiritual giant to disciple your children at home but nothing is further from the truth.

God Gives Parents Their Job Description

Listen, Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. Love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. These words that I am giving you today are to be in your heart. Repeat them to your children. Talk about them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.

Deuteronomy 6:4-7

Parents are called to love God with all you have; your heart, soul and strength. When you love God in this manner, your children see it and know that God is real and worthy of our devotion. The words of God are to be in your heart. This means spending time in God’s word. Daily. Apart from Him, you can do nothing. It’s like your cell phone. You charge it each day by connecting it to the power source. This enables it to do what it was designed to do. Otherwise, it can do nothing. Each day we need to connect to our power source, which is time in God’s presence with prayer, bible reading and worship. This allows His Holy Spirit to empower us to do what we were created to do. Love God and make disciples of our children. Apart from Him, we can do nothing.

This job description goes on to say that we are to then repeat the things and words of God to our children. Children learn through repetition. We are to talk about the things of God as we sit in our homes doing life, when we walk or drive down the road, when they lay down at tuck-in times and in the mornings as we start our days. Do you see how teaching our children the things of God is truly a lifestyle? It truly becomes how we live our lives. We allow Christ to work in and through us as parents to point our children to the One who created them and loves them most. In time, this results in our children coming to know, love and follow Jesus Christ as their own personal Lord and Savior.

So, I want to encourage you to take at least one step in this spiritual journey with your children. Maybe it’s to start praying over meals each day. Maybe it’s to include a bible story and prayers at bedtime. Maybe it’s to start each day with a quiet time with Jesus yourself. Maybe it’s a family devotion time one night a week. Maybe it’s to teach the children’s Sunday School lesson provided by the church each week. You can do this. Pray and ask God for ideas. I’m praying that your parenting might bring glory to God. I love each of you and I look forward to the time we are all together again.
