The Calm In Our Storm

The Calm In Our Storm

Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you; I will help you; I will hold on to you with my righteous right hand.”

Isaiah 41:10

Not too long ago I was traveling over a bridge during a storm. I could feel my car move in the wind as I tightened my knuckles around the steering wheel. I even felt a little knot in my stomach as I continued to drive. Out of the corner of my eye, I caught a glimpse of the water below and was quickly reminded that even the wind and waves obey Jesus’ commands. We read in Matthew 8:23-27 about the disciples in a boat with Jesus during a storm. While Jesus was sleeping, the disciples became afraid. They woke Jesus, asking Him to save them. Matthew 8:26 says, “He said to them, ‘Why are you afraid, you of little faith?’ Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm.”

How about you? What do you do when you are in the middle of one of life’s storms?  Do you get consumed with the storm or do you look to your Savior? Are you full of fear or do you call out in faith? The enemy would love for you to keep your eyes focused on whatever is swirling around you stirring up your anxiety and worry, but Jesus wants you to keep your eyes focused on Him. Trust me, I get it. Life is hard. There are unpaid bills, parenting, sickness, parenting, busy schedules, medical tests, unemployment and did I say parenting? The good news is that we are not called to go through life alone. We are never in a storm all by ourselves. Isaiah 41:10 tells us, “Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you; I will help you; I will hold on to you with my righteous right hand.” I’m pretty sure that when God tells us not to fear, He means it. I’m confident that when God says that He will help us, He means it. I know with all my heart that when God says He will hold us and be with us, He means it. There will always be trials and storms that come our way. We just need to remember our storm protection. We need to stay in God’s word daily and we need to pray. We need to stay connected to God and His people. We need to spend time with God every day of the week, not just on Sundays or when we can fit it into our schedules. God is our calm in the middle of life’s storms. God is the peace when we are surrounded by chaos. God is our strength when we feel weak. I want to encourage you this week to keep your eyes focused on the One who calms the wind and waves. He will calm you too.
