Marks of a Jesus Follower Study and Quiet Times For Students

Being a follower of Christ isn’t easy. As the common saying goes, “If it was easy, everyone would do it.” If you have been a fully devoted follower of Christ for any amount of time, you have come across challenging times. If each day you are dying to yourself and your own desires, you have had to sacrifice in order to follow Jesus. Maybe it’s a hobby, or a friendship, or even a childhood dream. God calls us to lay those down in order to follow Him. Colossians 2 is a letter of both encouragement and challenge. Paul reminds the church of what’s most important—faithfulness to Jesus Christ. Paul is concerned that some in the church have been led astray by “fine-sounding arguments” or teachings that go against the truth about Jesus (verse 4). Paul challenges the Colossians to be united in love and to continue to live and practice the teachings of Jesus. He encourages them to stand firm for Jesus and to continue to grow in Him.

“So then, just as you have received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.”

Colossians 2:6-7

This is a decision we are faced with each day. Are we going to spend today growing closer to Christ, allowing the Holy Spirit to live in us? Or are we going to spend today chasing after our own fleshly desire? Being a follower of Christ isn’t easy, and I don’t believe it was designed to be. Our Heavenly Father knew exactly what He was doing because, although being a follower of Christ isn’t easy, it’s more than possible by allowing the Holy Spirit to empower us to live the life that He is calling us to live. As followers of Christ, let’s not settle for being mediocre. Let’s strive to live for Christ in all that we do. It might not be easy but He is worthy, and a life devoted to Christ is more than worth it!

Sunday Lesson Plan – April 26

1 For I want you to know how great a struggle I have for you, for those in Laodicea, and for all who have not seen me in person. 2 I want their hearts to be encouraged and joined together in love, so that they may have all the riches of assured understanding and have the knowledge of God’s mystery —Christ. 3 All the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are hidden in Him.
4 I am saying this so that no one will deceive you with persuasive arguments. 5 For I may be absent in body, but I am with you in spirit, rejoicing to see how well ordered you are and the strength of your faith in Christ.
6 Therefore, as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, •walk in Him, 7 rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, overflowing with gratitude.
