11 For this reason God sends them a strong delusion so that they will believe the lie, 12 so that all will be condemned—those who did not believe the truth but delighted in unrighteousness.

13 But we ought to thank God always for you, brothers and sisters loved by the Lord, because from the beginning God has chosen you for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and through belief in the truth. 14 He called you to this through our gospel, so that you might obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. 15 So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold to the traditions you were taught, whether by what we said or what we wrote.

16 May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us eternal encouragement and good hope by grace, 17 encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good work and word.

2 Thessalonians 2:11-17

Warm-up Questions

  • Do you ever worry about what the future holds?
  • Is the world getting better or worse? How?
  • Do you think there’s a real Devil or Satan? Why or why not? Is Satan at work in the world today? How?

OBSERVE

  • Read 2 Thessalonians 2:11-12. What kind of delusion is being talked about here?
  • From verses 13-15, has Paul talked about the subject of the future before to the Thessalonians?
  • In verse 16, what’s the message from Paul to the Christians?
  • In verse 17, what do we learn about hope and God’s grace?

THINK

  • What does Paul say about the lawless one in verses 11-12?
  • Whom does it sound like the lawless one serves?
  • Based on what Paul says in this passage, how do you think the church should respond regarding the future? Should we be worried?
  • Why do you think people worry about the future?

APPLY

  • According to Paul, who do you think is really in control of the future?
  • How do you respond to the future? Do you fear what might happen?
  • We know from this chapter that God is in control and in the end he punishes the wicked, but how are we as believers supposed to act before that happens?
  • Paul ends chapter 2 by praising the Thessalonians for their choice of salvation, but he also encourages them to stay firm. How can you stand firm? What can help you stand firm, according to verses 13-17?
